By standard definition, a modern kitchen is any kitchen that uses electricity or natural gas. So technically speaking, I guess every kitchen in the western world is known as a modern kitchen. However for the purposes of this article, we're going to expand the definition and focus on the conveniences of modern kitchen design and the benefits that you can potentially enjoy every day no matter your lifestyle.
Neutral colors - not only do modern kitchens thrive on neutral tones, but you also won't find a lot of different colors. If you want to add splashes of color to contrast the neutral shades, it's fine as long as you don't go overboard. It's best to stick with just a few bright colors to balance out the space, not five or six different colors. Too many different shades can be overwhelming.
How advanced do you want your kitchen appliances to be? Some people love getting kitchen ideas from up to the minute technology websites and catalogs. If, to you, a modern kitchen uses highly technological appliances, look for refrigerators, ranges, etc with computers installed. A range that sits into the counter and uses a computer chip to raise the temperature of the 'burners' is a modern stove. A refrigerator with a computer chip that tells you to buy more cheese because someone ate the last piece earlier in the day would be ideal in your kitchen.
Some people might scoff at the idea of a chair being a work of art but contemporary kitchen chairs are often exactly that. The sign of the modern kitchen chair is that it does not have to serve any real purpose for people to appreciate it on an artistic level. Are your hairs artistic enough to fulfill that requirement? Could you sit one of your chairs in the living room, not put anything on it and still have people admire it for its artistic merits? If so, then you have modern kitchen chairs!
Stainless steel - stainless steel has prevailed as one of the top finishes in modern kitchens, and this trend probably isn't going anywhere for a while! Easy to clean, stainless steel can be used for countertops, cabinets, backsplashes and appliances (microwaves, ovens, sinks, toasters - you name it!).
Cabinetry of a modern luxury kitchen will distinctly lack extra features found in traditional style designs. Most modern cabinets are simple, square or rectangular shaped, without fancy door handles. Although 'plain' the look of the cabinetry is sleek, clean, and highly functional. The look is all about working properly and showcasing your personal style. In fact, you may wish to completely leave cabinet doors off for the sheer convenience of access and sexy open look.
